|The Perfect Honeymoon Location, Lydgate House lies in the very heart of 368 square miles of Dartmoor National Park. This late Victorian Country House, reached by a private lane, is set in its own 36 acres overlooking the East Dart river and valley, offering perfect peace and quiet with direct access onto the moor. Lydgate House, now under new ownership, faces south with stunning views across both valley and moorland and is privately owned and run by Douglas & Anna Geikie, who aim to provide the very best in personal service.
Guests return again and again to Lydgate House and most new visitors come through recommendation.
With an atmosphere more like a country house than a hotel, Lydgate House is perfect for those looking for a relaxed environment surrounded by glorious countryside. The guests’ lounge, which also houses the small bar, has a log burning stove and beautiful views across the valley. Bookshelves and tables abound with novels, magazines and books on Dartmoor and many other subjects. A small snug leads to the conservatory dining room, again with spectacular views. The terrace and gardens overlook the valley and lead directly onto the moor.
Within the 36 acres of Lydgate House there is a Hay Meadow containing several rare species of plants including orchids. The river running through the grounds attracts a variety of birds from Buzzards and Herons to Swallows and House Martins who make their home here. Dartmoor ponies and cattle graze the fields while the paddock provides home to aged sheep and a variety of hens.
